Early Hawthorn…Or Not?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

When we were out on the walk when I noticed the first bluebells of 2012, I also noticed that the hawthorn blossom, or “may” as it’s also known, was out.  This seemed remarkably early this year too, but on reflection I realised I was wrong.  Here’s why… (more…)

Bluebell update

Regular readers will know I have a soft spot for bluebells.  All the same, I was amazed when I spotted the first flowers of the season today while out on a family walk. (more…)

Durham’s Bluebell Woods

Monday, March 19th, 2012

The Common or English Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) is a popular photo subject but notoriously difficult to capture.  In Durham there are a few options when it comes to seeking them out – here are some places to try. (more…)

Macro shots from Houghall Woods

Friday, June 17th, 2011

OK, I’d better confess up front that these aren’t really macro shots.  But they are shots taken using just my macro lens in different roles on a photo walk from earlier this spring.  The bluebells weren’t quite in full flower, suffering from the dry spell it seemed.  All the same, I found some different angles and a couple of pleasant surprises.  More inside… (more…)

Spring Outings

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

I visited Houghall Woods to photograph the bluebells last week.  They weren’t quite at their peak – there were some good individual specimens but the “carpet” wasn’t at its height.  I’ll publish the pictures from this trip soon.

At the weekend I met up with some family members at Jervaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire.  This choice was mainly a convenient location to meet, but it turned out to be a lovely place with some potential for a photographic project or just a visit.  It wasn’t a suitable day to be taking photos for the blog or galleries but I’ll certainly be back.

I also visited Cragside on another family outing, mainly to see how well advanced the rhododendrons blooms are.  I was lulled into optimism by some neighbours plants which were well in flower, but they must be early flowering varieties – some of the shrubs on the estate were in flower (some even past their best), but the main spectacle hadn’t arrived yet.  In the meantime, here is an example from our garden last year – click through to the gallery for more pictures:
