Durham parkrun

Monday, June 30th, 2014

I realise it’s been a little quiet on the blog lately (understatement acknowledged!).  The short reason is that the time I would normally put towards the blog has been taken up with other things, in particular doing a sponsored charity swim over the last few months of 2013 and running over the first half of 2014.  I’m hoping to develop the running into another charity fund-raiser in due course, but in the meantime there’s a photography angle I want to share with you.  More after the jump…

Cycle Race – Tour Series Durham Stage

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

I have wanted to shoot this event for several years but something has always prevented me from attending…until this year.  Not even a last-minute bout of man-flu could keep me away.

Durham bluebell update 2013

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

I haven’t been out shooting bluebells yet this year, but earlier today I dropped into the top of Houghall Woods to check on their progress.  Most flowers are out a little later than normal this year due to the cold March and April we had, but they’re out near the Botanic Gardens.  This is a grabbed snapshot I took with my phone, but should give you an idea of how they’re getting on.  Of course, slopes with different light levels and aspects will have flowers at different stages, but I would expect that you will find something suitable to shoot in the Durham woods right now.

Cast a cloot

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

The May is well and truly oot (in both senses) and I’ve cast a cloot.  Admittedly, I put it straight back on when the temperature dropped again, but the burst of warmth at the end of May and copious rain has helped the flora progress nicely.  (more…)

On Saturday I had a short scouting trip down to Blaid’s Wood in Durham and found the bluebells in full flower.  Photos after the jump… (more…)

Bluebells are here

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

I’ve been for a short walk through Blaid’s Wood (see this earlier post for details) today. The wood is full of bluebells in flower between the road and the old waggonway – it’s well worth a visit.  Photos will follow shortly.

Early Hawthorn…Or Not?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

When we were out on the walk when I noticed the first bluebells of 2012, I also noticed that the hawthorn blossom, or “may” as it’s also known, was out.  This seemed remarkably early this year too, but on reflection I realised I was wrong.  Here’s why… (more…)

Bluebell update

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Regular readers will know I have a soft spot for bluebells.  All the same, I was amazed when I spotted the first flowers of the season today while out on a family walk. (more…)
